Membership T&Cs
1. Membership general terms and conditions
1.1. These terms and conditions apply to the provision of membership services by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), a company registered in England and Wales under number RC000906, whose registered office is Suite 651, Milton Keynes Business Centre, Foxhunter Drive, Linford Wood, Milton Keynes, MK14 6GD.
1.2. You are deemed to have accepted the terms and conditions when you submit your application or from the date of any performance of membership services (whichever happens earlier). These terms and conditions are the entire agreement between us.
1.3. We will use our reasonable endeavours to complete the performance of the membership services within the time agreed. However, time shall not be of the essence in the performance of our obligations.
1.4. Membership services are deemed to include but are not limited to the provision of member benefits, enabling upgrades, access to member-only areas on the CIEP website, discounts on events and services, member-only advice, and use of designatory letters and logos.
1.5. We reserve the right to change these terms and conditions as we deem necessary from time to time or as may be required by law. We will notify you when any changes have been made, and revisions will be posted on the CIEP website. You are deemed to have accepted these unless you advise us otherwise.
2. Membership applications
2.1. No application can be activated or reviewed without the membership fees having been paid.
2.2. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
2.3. Application fees paid are non-refundable.
2.4. It is the applicant’s responsibility, prior to starting the application process, to ensure that they have read and understood the criteria and requirements of membership and have established their ability to obtain and provide the CIEP with the required information.
2.5. The CIEP reserves the right to request additional information from applicants to establish their suitability to join the Institute.
2.6. The CIEP reserves the right to decline an application at its absolute discretion. The CIEP’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
2.7. By applying, all applicants are confirming that they have read and understood the Membership Terms and Conditions and agree to abide by the CIEP's Membership Codes, and other governing documents and terms of service published from time to time.
2.8. It is not CIEP’s policy to store data once it is no longer required, and therefore applicants should retain copies for their own records if they wish to, prior to submission to the CIEP.
2.9. Applicants must provide an email address and agree to electronic correspondence for issues central to their application and membership, such as renewals information and updates about membership and governance. Further details can be found in the Privacy notice.
3. Membership applications from individuals
3.1. Individual applications incur a non-refundable application fee.
4. Membership applications from organisations
4.1. The CIEP will carry out all checks that are deemed relevant to establish that a corporate applicant meets the CIEP’s exacting standards and is suitable to be associated with CIEP’s good name and reputation.
5. Membership
5.1. The CIEP reserves the right to remove or add a category of membership or change the joining criteria requirements subject to the requirements of the Bylaws and Regulations.
5.2. Membership starts on the day the subscription fee is received for a period of 12 months and that will be the renewal date in subsequent years.
6. Fees and payment
6.1. The full list of fees, charges and methods of payment are available on the fees page and can change without notice.
6.2. Application fees are separate to the annual subscription fee.
6.3. Annual subscription fees are payable at the point of making an application to join the CIEP. A refund will be made if the invitation to join is withdrawn and the application declined in line with point 2.6 of these terms.
6.4. Annual subscription fees are not subject to VAT. All other fees are inclusive of VAT.
6.5. The CIEP will suspend any further provision of membership services, and will cancel or charge the non-member rates for future services and events that have been ordered or arranged during the period of membership, if the annual subscription is not paid in full by the renewal date.
6.6 All payments must be made in GBP unless otherwise agreed in writing in advance of the payment.
6.7 You allow the CIEP to charge your card for future membership payments if you have given us permission to save your card details for future use.
7. Termination of membership
7.1 The CIEP can terminate membership immediately if the Council deems that a member has breached the Membership Codes and where this sanction has been applied. Fees are non-refundable.
7.2 Membership will automatically expire if the annual subscription is not paid in full within 30 days of the renewal date.
7.3 Upon resignation or revocation, ex-members must return to the CIEP any property of the Institute including membership certificates and remove all references to the Institute and its membership categories from their name, their communications (including electronic), their website, their CV and any advertising material.
7.4 Rejoining fees may be applicable once a membership has expired. Full details are published on the CIEP website.
8. Intellectual property
8.1 We reserve all copyright and any other intellectual property rights that may subsist in the provision of our membership services. We reserve the right to take any appropriate action to restrain or prevent the infringement of such intellectual property rights.
9. Data protection
9.1 During the process of application and supplying membership services, the CIEP may gain access to, transfer, store or process personal data of applicants and members. This process takes place as defined within the rules of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Further details can be found in the CIEP Privacy Notice.
