About the course

Proofreading 1: Introduction is the ideal place to start if you want to learn about the fundamental skills required of a proofreader. It explains the differences between proofreading and proof-editing, where proofreading fits into a variety of publishing processes, the types of error a proofreader is expected to spot and correct, and much more. This course is ideal for you if:

  • you’re thinking about a career in proofreading
  • you've been working as a proofreader for a while but without any formal training
  • your job involves some proofreading and you would like to understand this part of your role better.

This introductory course aims to support students in determining whether proofreading is right for them. Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired some of the fundamental skills and knowledge required of a proofreader but should develop these further via additional training before seeking professional work. The CIEP Proofreading 2 and Proofreading 3 courses build on the learning delivered in this course and equip students with the requisite skills and knowledge to be a competent proofreader.

What the course will teach you

This course teaches the very basics of proofreading. By the time you’ve completed this training, you’ll understand:

  • the types of error a proofreader is expected to spot and correct
  • how to mark those errors on paper and onscreen using BSI symbols, PDF markup tools and Word's Track Changes
  • some of the common editorial conventions in the UK and how to apply them
  • how to exercise judgement in how much to change
  • the difference between proofreading and proof-editing
  • the importance of obtaining sufficient guidance from the client about the work they expect you to do
  • where proofreading fits into a variety of publishing processes.
