Copyediting 1: Introduction

This course is for you if you're thinking about a career in copyediting, if you've been working as an editor for a while but without any formal training, or if you'd like to find out about how to move from proofreading to copyediting.

About the course 

This is the virtual learning version of Copyediting 1: Introduction, the first in the CIEP's suite of core copyediting courses. The course includes five live sessions, delivered on Zoom, which all delegates will join on set dates and times. Copyediting 1: Introduction is the ideal places to start if you want to learn about the fundamental skills required of a copyeditor. The course explains the difference between proofreading and copyediting, how a copyeditor works on various types of text, how to exercise judgement over how much to change, and much more. By the end of the course, you'll understand:
  • the differences between proofreading and copyediting and where copyediting fits into a variety of publishing processes
  • how a copyeditor works on various types of text, both non-fiction and fiction
  • the types of error a copyeditor is expected to spot and correct and how to mark those errors efficiently using Track Changes in Word
  • some of the common editorial conventions in British and US English and how to apply them effectively
  • the basics of dealing with text elements such as notes, tables and illustrations
  • how to exercise judgement over how much to change, and how to communicate effectively with the author on queries or suggestions
  • the importance of obtaining sufficient guidance from the client about the work they expect you to do. 
How does the course work?

The virtual learning version of Copyediting 1: Introduction is delivered over five live sessions, each lasting two hours. Short pre-session exercises will be set ahead of each session. Delegates are required to attend all sessions, which will be delivered as follows: 

Session 1, Wednesday 22 January 10.00am-12.00pm (GMT) - where copyediting fits in the publishing process and how it differs from proofreading; how far to go when copyediting; how the brief from the client can help you judge the level of intervention

Session 2, Wednesday 29 January 10.00am-12.00pm (GMT) - style guides and style sheets; copyediting fiction

Session 3, Wednesday 5 February 10.00am-12.00pm (GMT) - non-fiction editing; quotations, list and notes

Session 4, Wednesday 12 February 10.00am-12.00pm (GMT) - non-fiction editing continued; illustrations and tables

Session 5, Wednesday 19 February 10.00am-12.00pm (GMT) - humorous texts; where to go next; final Q&A
