Pre-conference tour
Birmingham’s history, modernity and amazing public art
Walking tour, 1.30–3.30 Saturday 7 September
The tour will start by exploring some of the amazing public art on the Aston University campus, and then head along the canal to the ancient area of Digbeth, where Birmingham began as a market hamlet. You’ll discover atmospheric parts of the hidden city – where the Peaky Blinders film is being produced and the BBC is building its new headquarters in an old factory – and some of the huge range of Digbeth's street art.
The guide is Jonathan Berg, author and photographer of the new book Birmingham's Public Art. Jonathan believes a walking tour should be fun, educational and memorable – so expect to be entertained, with some audience participation thrown in for free!
Each participant will receive a complimentary Discovering Birmingham guide book (RRP £5).
The guide will have a personal amplifier that will transmit to receivers worn by participants. If possible, please bring a set of headphones with a 3.5mm jack. If you don’t have any, the guide will provide a new set for free (although a donation to their charity would be appreciated at the end of the tour).
The tour will begin and end at the Conference Aston hotel.

Please note: If you’ve already booked to attend conference and want to take part in the tour, go to the My CIEP area of the website and select ‘My events’. Then, choose the conference and click on ‘Get more tickets’. Scroll to the end and add the tour option. You will then be asked for payment.
For those who’ve not yet booked the conference, you can purchase a ticket for the tour when you make your booking. It’s available as an ‘add-on’ when you select your conference ticket and other options.
