About Marieke

Hi there! I’m an academic copyeditor who helps academics and PhD students prepare their manuscripts for publication or submission.

I work on journal articles, book manuscripts, and PhD dissertations, improving grammar, punctuation, flow, and overall consistency. I work with the Chicago Manual of Style, Hart’s Rules (Oxford style), APA, MLA, Harvard, and other (citation) styles.

I have a PhD in Political Science and a strong background in Arabic, urban studies, geography, and the political economy of the Middle East. I obtained my MA from the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon. I have published several academic journal articles and book chapters myself.

TESTIMONIALS (more can be found on my website)

Prof. Daniel Bertrand Monk |Professor, Colgate University

Marieke is a consummate professional. She knows all aspects of academic publishing and expedites careful copy-editing beautifully. She takes the most difficult part of shepherding a project to publication and makes it painless. I cannot imagine doing a large editorial project without her. Or a small one.

Prof. Hagar Kotef |Senior Lecturer, SOAS University of London

Marieke worked with me on a book manuscript, and was a thorough, attentive, and very engaged editor. She worked incredibly efficiently, even though the text was quite dense theoretically. She did a fantastic work in making it clean, correct, and coherent – both in technical terms (style of references, redundancies, typos), but also in terms of the argument. Her work is truly excellent and I highly recommend her as an editor.

Dr. Sylvia I. Bergh and Dr. Ward Vloeberghs| Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer, Erasmus University Rotterdam

We hired Marieke as a copyeditor for an edited volume and she assisted us in a remarkably efficient way. Her work has greatly improved the quality of our manuscript as Marieke not only served as an attentive editor but she also prepared a very helpful style sheet which prevented a lot of double work.

Marieke really understands what it is to prepare a manuscript for submission and, moreover, had content expertise that really helped in improving the coherence of our book (especially with regard to the transliteration of Arabic words and terminology).

Not only did Marieke’s interventions clarify the meaning of dozens of passages, but her efforts also secured the compliance of all chapters with the overall guidelines imposed by our publisher. Marieke’s communication was impeccable, full of flexibility and understanding despite her often amazingly short turnarounds. Marieke is by far the best copy editor we have worked with, and we most certainly recommend her services to colleagues and friends.

Dr. Boris Verbrugge | Senior Researcher, KU Leuven

Marieke edited an article that I co-authored with a Tanzanian PhD-student. As an ex-colleague, I knew that Marieke would deliver, but the result was even better than expected. Aside from the foolproof language editing, she made clear efforts to understand the message that the author wanted to bring across, and she made some very useful suggestions as to how the article can be improved further. It was at least partly thanks to her professional editing services that the article was accepted without major revisions.

Dr. Andrea Núñez Casal | Goldsmiths, University of London, United Kingdom

Marieke proofread and formatted my doctoral dissertation. I could not be more satisfied with the result. She was very conscious about and sensitive to the nature and challenges of my work and writing, involving embodied experiences of health and disease. She is incredibly accurate, reliable, responsible and transparent, all essential qualities in a editor, and especially so for early-career researchers, an uncertain stage in which the pressures of authorship and publishing are at its highest. In addition, working with Marieke turned the weeks before the official submission of my PhD into a pleasurable experience! I highly recommend her editorial services.
