About

Editor and co-founder of the award-winning Holdfast Magazine (British Fantasy Society award for Best Magazine 2015) Bookseller Rising Star 2017, and CIEP (Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading) professional member, I have ten years of experience working in the publishing industry as an editor. I am comfortable working on a wide range of fiction, from women’s fiction to thrillers, SFF to historical romance, with a specialism in science fiction and fantasy. Whether you want to prepare your manuscript for submission to industry professionals or polish your book for self-publication, together, we can get your work ready for the next stage of its journey.

My time at Canelo and Bloomsbury have given me a breadth of experience not only as an editor, but also as a proofreader and seasoned submission reader.

testimonials

The best thing about working with Laurel (apart from her overflowing energy and enthusiasm) was her ability to put her finger on things that weren’t quite right in my book. There were inconsistencies that had bothered me for ages, and loose ends that needed to be tidied up properly – Laurel found them all and made gentle suggestions that helped me make a better book'

Helen Wright, author of A Matter of Oaths

'From our first meeting, it was clear that Laurel was a deft hand at this. I came in with a slightly unconventional request that blurred editorial lines, but she was confident that we could make it work. And it certainly did. At no point did I feel at a loss, and Laurel was supportive and communicative through the whole process. Her attention to detail was impeccable, her knowledge of subject matter, genre, and wider industry were invaluable, and her manner both professional and friendly. I would highly recommend Laurel to any writer out there, either starting out or established.'

 Morgan Greene, author.

'Laurel's understanding of the nuances of language and story helped to raise the level of my manuscript. She empowered me as an author to maintain dominion over my work while guiding me with insightful and prudent editorial suggestions. My authorship is better because of her. Thank you for your dedication and timeliness to my process.'

Adam Smee, author of Scarboys.

'Laurel’s quick handle on the conceit and delivery of my work made for a set of notes that were deft, focused and encouraging, meaning that subsequent revisions were achievable and positive. I would recommend Laurel to anyone in the early stages of moulding their story; an impartial, experienced perspective may well save on precious time spent travelling in the wrong direction!'

Charlie, author.
