Manuscript assessments, line editing, copy-editing, and layout/formatting for independent authors of science fiction, fantasy, crime, historical fiction, romance and erotica, and narrative non-fiction. I offer bespoke editorial packages that can cover a combination of services.

Line editing, copy-editing and proofreading for publishers.

I'm Kat, book editor and proofreader. Genre fiction (sci-fi/fantasy, crime, historical, thriller, romance/erotica) and narrative non-fiction (biography/autobiography, self-help, history, paranormal, dating/romance/erotica, nature/outdoors, pets/wildlife, internet/social media, adventure, parenthood) are my bread-and-butter, but my love for the written word has taken me in a variety of directions.

I regularly work with ESL authors to ensure their work reads naturally in English while losing nothing from their voice and rhythm.

I am enthusiastic, approachable, creative and efficient. I love reading, always have, and I am passionate about helping to bring as many well-crafted books into the world as possible. You can rely on me to give your work the respect it deserves, retaining your unique voice while clearing away the smoke. Together, we will make your story the best that it can be.

When you hire me for a manuscript assessment, line edit, copy-edit or proofread, you will deal directly with me from start to finish.

As a professional member of the Chartered Institute for Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), I am bound by their Code of Practice. I am trained in proofreading and copy-editing by the SfEP (the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, now the CIEP) and Chapterhouse, and developmental editing by ClubEd.

Testimonials

I have been nothing but impressed with Kat Harvey's editorial prowess. She helped make my story the best it could be; let her do the same for you!  Anthony Laken, author of One Cog Turning

Kat Harvey is one of our strongest editorial team members. She is thorough and efficient in her method. Luna Press Publishing, Edinburgh

I have worked with Kat Harvey on two novels to date and consider her an excellent proof reader and editor. Kat takes great care to ensure that she completes her work to deadlines and undertakes the initial ground work with necessary diligence ensuring that she fully understands an author’s intentions. Her own knowledge and interests are broad and in my experience she quickly grasped what I was trying to achieve and helped me enormously. For me, writing fiction for the first time proved a challenge but Kat was equal to it and soon set me on the right track. Her suggestions are insightful but are only ever made with the weight of experience and she maintains a great respect for an author’s style and work. In addition to this competence Kat is a lovely lady who is easy to communicate with and I say this without ever having met her in person! I highly recommend Kat’s services and will continue to use them myself in future. Alistair Hall, author of historical fiction

My experience working on two novels with Kat Harvey was an absolute delight and a revelation about how necessary getting help in writing a book always is. Kat’s editing was attentive to even minor details. She picked up on inconsistencies and repetitions and added recommendations for change based on her own extensive knowledge and insight. Corrections on grammar, punctuation and use of proper English were her forte and my weaknesses. I agreed with most of her proposals, if not all, was impressed with her patience and consistency of style and above all relied on her intuition about what should or should not appear on the page. I am eternally grateful to her for the transformation of the manuscript and the learning curve that preceded that. Her only drawback is that she is too good in what she does and her time is limited. Having said that, her efficiency in delivering on time, and in advance, was remarkable. Anna Koenig, ESL author of commercial fiction
