Featured

Further to my extensive proofreading and copyediting experience, both within the publishing industry and as a freelance editor, I have also received an extremely wide-ranging education that allows me to edit specialist academic literature with confidence and clarity. My first-class degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and master's degree (distinction) in Cognitive and Decision Sciences from University College London not only gave me deep scientific insight, which is vital when editing both academic and popular scientific work, but also broadened my horizons, grounding me in areas such as economics, philosophy, psychology and sociology. Since finishing with full-time education, I have edited a variety of manuscripts in these diverse subject areas to a very high standard.

During my time as a freelance editor, I have worked with a broad range of companies on an assortment of manuscript types, from short essays to textbooks. I have demonstrated that I am comfortable working with a variety of manuscript types written for diverse audiences. I have received much positive feedback from previous employers and customers and have been praised for my rapid turnaround times.

My editorial experience also extends beyond non-fiction to encompass fiction copyediting, especially in the genres of science-fiction and fantasy. This work represents a dovetailing of my keen eye for detail and consistency and my passion for expressive literature.

Testimonials

I work with John Marr producing the journal Environmental Conservation together in a small team. We have worked very well together for over five years. John copyedits this journal on a daily basis and has a strong work ethic. He ensures journal article style consistency at all times. Facts are checked thoroughly and he is familiar with the reference works and information sources of the trade. He is both accurate and fast, delivering copyedited articles to me before they are due on a regular basis. John’s ability to pay particular attention to fine text detail when collating author corrections and checking revised proofs are additional skills. He answers any questions I, the authors and the editors may have promptly enabling the journal to continue to publish on schedule. John is a pleasure to work with because he has a real passion for his editing. I would strongly recommend him to anyone in need of an exceptional copyeditor.
Mary Mochrie, Journals Content Manager, Cambridge University Press

John is one of the finest copy editors that I’ve had the pleasure to work with in almost three decades of academic publishing. He is unfailingly prompt, highly efficient, and brings a close eye for detail as well as an impressively light touch to his work. I highly recommend him.
Sally Sheldon, Professor of Law, University of Kent and University of Technology Sydney

Thanks so very much – you are remarkable at your job and incredibly kind. I could not feel luckier than to have worked with you.
James N. Druckman, Payson S. Wild Professor of Political Science, Northwestern University and editor of Advances in Experimental Political Science

John provided a first-class copy-editing service for my book, Child Development: Birth to Adolescence (Cambridge University Press, 2025). He has a great eye for detail, sentence craft, and knowledge of writing style and worked collaboratively and efficiently with me as the author on improving the manuscript. His edits improved the clarity, consistency, and concision of the text while not being overly intrusive. I would recommend his copy-editing skills.
Dr Paul Ibbotson, Senior Lecturer in Child Development, The Open University

Thanks John. You have been an absolutely wonderful copy editor. I have really appreciated your attention to detail.
Sonja J. Ellis, Associate Professor in Human Development at The University of Waikato

It was a true pleasure working with John! He is professional, fast, and friendly. I really appreciate his attention to detail, and he significantly improved the quality of my book. My previous experience with copy editors has been largely reversing the changes they made, but John is highly skilled – I came to really trust his judgment. I hope we get a chance to work together again in the future.
Professor Scott Slotnick, Department of Psychology & Neuroscience, Boston College, author of
Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory, 2nd ed.

Thank you so much. I have felt in very safe hands: your copy-editing work has been thorough but not at all heavy-handed or intrusive, and I'm very grateful for the places where you've flagged that the meaning was unclear.
Susannah Cornwall, Professor of Constructive Theologies, University of Exeter

I rather feel you deserve co-authorship for your sterling proofing of the Opinion piece.
Michael Macphail, Associate Professor at the Department of Archaeology and Natural History, College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University

I was really impressed by the quality of your work, not to mention how quick it was.
Dr Filippo Fontanelli, Senior Lecturer of International Law, University of Edinburgh, School of Law
