Having completed a degree in English literature in 1990, I worked as a librarian at the National Library of New Zealand from 1991 to 1997. I then completed a one-year publishing programme at Whitireia Polytechnic and joined the publishing team at Penguin Books (NZ) Ltd, first as an editorial assistant and later as a project editor. During my five years at Penguin my responsibilities included editing, proofreading, photo selection, briefing of cover and page design, blurb writing and liaison with authors, typesetters, photographers and printers. I worked on a wide range of titles including fiction and non-fiction (cookbooks, sport, biography, history, autobiography and natural history). In 2003 I left publishing to embark on a career in English language teaching, while also maintaining a sideline as a freelance proofreader and editor. Between 2007 and 2012 I edited and proofread non-fiction books for New Zealand publishers as well as Continuum in the USA. I also wrote copy for a study guide for Japanese learners of English. Between 2013 and 2022 I focused solely on my career as an English teacher and IELTS examiner. In early 2023 I became a member of CIEP, subsequently completing several core courses in order to refresh my skills. I now look forward to applying my skills and experience to editing and proofreading projects and I am currently available for work.
