About Eleanor

Featured

An experienced proofreader and copy editor specialising in crime, historical fiction and fantasy, working with both publishers and independent authors looking to self-publish.

I pride myself on being great to work with, efficient and detail-oriented. I love what I do, and hopefully that’s evident through the testimonials from some of my clients below!

Since I made the leap to go freelance in January 2019, I have worked on over eighty novels, covering a plethora of genres. I am particularly drawn to crime/mystery, fantasy and historical fiction, as well as middle-grade and YA fiction, but I also have experience editing romance, contemporary fiction, biographies and memoirs.

I know how to communicate my edits in the clearest and most helpful way possible, whether that’s using Microsoft Word’s track changes function or the commenting tools in Adobe PDF. I relish being involved in such a vital part of the publishing process, which means I take the responsibility seriously and give my all to every project.

Testimonials

"Eleanor is a very talented proofreader – she’s extremely detail-oriented and has always shown great judgement in both her changes and her queries. She has never missed a deadline and is great to work with." – Ditte Løkkegaard, Legend Press

"Eleanor has been an essential resource for my editorial team at BookLife Publishing. Not only has she been a pleasure to work with, being thorough and timely, but she has also proven to be reliable and capable of tackling any task I have sent her way. Eleanor Smith is always my first choice for an external proofreader. I would happily recommend her services to anyone." – Robin Twiddy, Editorial Team Leader at BookLife Publishing

"Eleanor is a joy to work with. Always on time and on budget and her proofreading work is of the highest standard. She is my ‘go to’ person for projects that need VIP treatment." – Julie Willis, Editorial and Pre-press Director at River Editorial

"Eleanor's great – she always runs to schedule, has a fine eye for detail and produces excellent results. I've worked with her for a few years now on a wide variety of different publishing projects and would unreservedly recommend her proofreading services." – Duncan Lockerbie, Lumphanan Press

"Eleanor Smith had been commissioned to proof read a couple of manuscripts for us. Her last project was an historical fiction novel of 97,000 words. We have found her work to be of a very high standard with meticulous attention to detail. She always notices small inconsistences as well as the more obvious spelling, typos and literals. Above all Eleanor’s pleasant attitude and helpfulness makes her an ideal person to work with both publishers and authors. I would have no hesitation in recommending Eleanor for any proof reading project she may be considered for." –Janet Weitz, Alliance Publishing Press
