About Dan

Featured

Specialist areas include literary fiction, short stories, speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror) and crime fiction, but all projects will be considered. Recent jobs include:

My services include - but are not limited to - editorial advice, copy-editing, proofreading, developmental editing and critiques. I also recognise that every project is different, and every client has unique requirements, including budget. I aim to be as flexible as possible, offering bespoke services tailored to the needs of each project. I'm particularly interested in working with independent publishers and self-publishing authors.

I have worked as a freelance writer and editor for over ten years, writing fiction and non-fiction for print and online markets in the UK and the US. In September 2022 I won a British Fantasy Award for Writing the Uncanny, co-edited with Richard V. Hirst. My anthology This Dreaming Isle (Unsung Stories, 2018) was shortlisted for Best Edited Anthology at the Shirley Jackson Awards and Best Anthology at the British Fantasy Awards, while Being Dad (Tangent, 2016) won Best Anthology 2016 at the Saboteur Awards. I have previously taught creative writing workshops at Edge-Lit and at Richard Hugo House, Seattle, and have featured on a number of panels at writing conventions. I am a member of the Society of Authors, an Active Member of the Horror Writers' Association, and a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. testimonials

Dan has worked on several manuscripts for Dodo Ink and we've been impressed by his sharp mind, attention to detail and fast turnaround. We'd definitely recommend him as an excellent proofreader.

Sam Mills, Managing Director - Dodo Ink

I've worked with dozens of editors, copy-editors, and proofreaders, and Dan is definitely the best. His attention to detail is astonishing and his suggestions over less clear-cut aspects of the text were invariably spot-on.

Tom Jeffreys, Author - Signal Failure (Influx Press)
