About Christopher

Overview

I am a focused and conscientious editorial freelancer with 16 years of experience working in the educational publishing sector in the UK. I use the lessons I have learned in my career – from hands-on project management, copyediting and proofreading, as well as formal training – to apply the highest standard of quality control to teaching and learning titles.

I offer the following services as standard:

  • Proofreading (including digital testing)
  • Copyediting
  • Project management

I am also always happy to discuss a client's particular editorial needs and perform irregular or offbeat tasks when required.

Skills and qualifications

I am committed to continuing my professional development and seeking to maintain a high professional standard in my work. I have completed the following training courses:

  • Copyediting Skills by the Publishing Training Centre
  • Getting to Grips with Grammar and Punctuation by the CIEP
  • Proofreading 1: Introduction by the CIEP
  • Proofreading 2: Headway by the CIEP
  • Proofreading 3: Progress by the CIEP

I am proficient in the use of

  • Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Adobe Acrobat for proofreading
  • BSI marks for proofreading
  • XML-last workflows for educational publishing.

I studied at the University of Reading from 2004 to 2007 and I obtained a BA in Philosophy.

Experience

I have worked as a freelancer since 2020, proofreading, copyediting and managing projects of different sizes – from large, illustrated textbooks to small workbooks – for educational publishers and packagers. As well as working on print titles, I have increasingly been hired to quality-check digital resources, including interactive tests.

Before becoming a freelancer, I worked for twelve years in-house. During that time, I was part of the editorial teams at Galore Park Publishing, Rising Stars and RS Assessment from Hodder Education. I worked on a broad range of print and digital titles and across most subjects taught at primary and secondary school levels. I effectively managed my time and coordinated with suppliers and my teammates to control schedules and budgets, while staying focused on quality.

Subjects and formats

I am comfortable working in the following subject areas:

  • Assessment
  • Business studies
  • English literature
  • English language
  • Geography
  • History
  • ICT
  • Philosophy
  • Religious studies
  • Study skills
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Non-verbal reasoning

I have also successfully worked on many titles for maths and science at Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 levels, although I would not consider myself a maths or science specialist.

I have experience working in the following formats:

  • Textbooks
  • Revision guides
  • Workbooks
  • Exam practice books
  • Printed tests
  • Interactive (digital) tests
