Why chartership is important
Many professional bodies – such as those of surgeons, architects, lawyers or accountants – have a Royal Charter because it:
- distinguishes them as the expert voice on excellence in their field
- allows them to set standards, to promote the profession and to draw attention to issues of importance to those practising in their field
- lends their members a mark of quality and commitment to professional practice in fields demanding specialist skills.
The CIEP’s chartership raises awareness of the value of professional editors and proofreaders, and it gives the Institute the authority to set and raise editorial standards.
Our Charter's Objects and powers
Our Charter informs our strategic framework, including how the Institute is governed, the products and services we offer, and how we look after our customers and community. Find out more about its Objects and the powers it grants the Institute.
